Creative inventory click error

When I want to get a item out of the creative inventory, I must click and hold the mouse until I drop it into place. When I want to delete a item that I am using, holding shift and click the item does not work. Instead, I must click and hold the mouse and drag it to the delete box or to a empty space in my inventory.
