Invisible Barriers

I am in creative on a world with barrier blocks around me. As i select the barrier item in my inventory and hold it in my hand, i cannot see the barrier texture around me, they are still invisible

The world was super flat, and was updated from a previous version of minecraft.

To verify that it is a bug, i created a completely new default world, and the same bug was there.

What I expected to happen was...:
For the barrier texture to show up to tell me where the barriers are

What actually happened was...:
The barriers stayed invisible

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Place a barrier block in creative
2. Hold the barrier item in your hand
3. look at the barrier block you placed

 

I have also checked and i only have the default game textures applied, no texture packs are used
