Creepers dropping XP when exploded

I punched a creeper, and it exploded (normal countdown, etc). But it dropped experience, because it died within 5 seconds of me attacking it.

1. attack creeper
2. get it to explode
3. XP for (almost) nothing
4. ???
5. profit, because it's easier than actually killing the creeper.
