Taking fall damage when landing on edge of powder snow

I made a powder snow ladder with a gap every other block to my mine in survival and while I was sneaking to go down the snow faster I took fall damage whenever I landed on the edge of the block. The blue line in the texture pack shows approximately where I land and take damage.

 

I first noticed this problem on a server but confirmed it happens in singleplayer.
