Dramatic drop in framerate followed by game crash

After starting a new world within 5-10 minutes the games framerate drops to less than 5fps followed by the game crashing within 30 seconds of that. Tried multiple worlds with the same problem with nothing of note in common. I updated Java and the problem didn't occur until I re-spawned from death approximately 30 into a new world. Since updating the game has been able to muscle through the frame drop a couple times but not consistantly.  "Open JDK binary platform not responding" is the windows prompt I get when I try and exit after the game has frozen completely.
