Minecraft Client Freeze

Occasionally my minecraft client will stop responding. This is normal for me, no big deal. Typically I open Task Manager and end the process and that fixes it nicely. Well, since 1.6 came out, when MC stops responding I cannot quit the process, let mMinecraft shut itself down, etc. No matter how long I wait, the frozen screen remains until I restart my computer.
