Cannot place or break storage blocks on servers

When attempting to place or break a chest, ender chest, or barrel, the block is completely unresponsive. Holding down right click on the block only swings once and does not display any breaking animation. Other players on the server can interact with storage. Restarting the server and deleting player data does not fix the issue.
