Lag spike when going between chunks

Game runs smooth until I cross a border between chunks, then there's a noticeable jitter in the framerate for a moment, and it happens at every chunk border.  In the attached pics, 'lagspike01' is before crossing a chunk border, and 'lagspike02' is right after crossing a chunk border.
