Performance very bad on mid-end PC

Whenever I so much as attempt to play the game with settings that worked perfectly fine in 1.17, I experience major lag and framerate drops. Adjusting my settings slightly somewhat fixes the issue but my PC should surely be able to run Minecraft at at LEAST 30fps.
