Bed spawnpoint not being set

I was playing minecraft on a survival world and I placed a bed to sleep. I thought that when I would die, it would respawn me where I slept, like it normally does. Well this time, I died and I respawned where I first spawned when I created the world. I tried it again, this time dieing a different way, and it did it again.
