Extremely poor framerate in 1.17

Version 1.17.* exhibits extremely poor framerate on my MacBook Pro 2012, compared to version 1.16.5 on the same seed.

On 1.16.5 without Optifine, I obtain 30-40 fps, however, with version 1.17.1r-c1 I get approximately 20-25 fps, and often below 10. Map generation and loading is a lot slower (estimate 2x).

The poor performance seems to be linked to the "Smooth lighting" option, when I set i to "min" it improves somewhat.

Normally, I play with Optifine, so on 1.16.5 I typically get 50-60 fps, and the game is perfectly playable on my hardware. However, 1.17 is currently unplayable for me, the low framerate makes me dizzy.
