1.17 crashes when loading

When attempting to launch 1.17 on macOS Mojave, the game crashes with the message

ERROR

Game Crashed

An unexpected issue occurred and the game crashed. We're sorry for the invconvenience.

Exit Code: 0

I've cleaned out all other installations from the launcher other than 1.17 and even reinstalled the launcher but the error persists.  I read about the updated JVM being used with 1.17 so I double-checked and my install is set to "use bundled Java runtime".
