After death cannot see items dropped until exiting game and reentering

Both my friend and I play on a fabric server. We both died after the migration to 1.17 in two separate scenarios. 1 in the nether, 1 in the end, both from a great height. After returning to the death coordinates the other person could see our items but we could not. Interestingly if we ran around we could pick up the invisible items but could not see. In one case my friend used the /tp command and couldn't even see my character until he exited and reinterred the game.

What I expected to happen was...:
I expect to be able to see my dropped items if I return to my point of death within 5 minutes.

What actually happened was...:
I was not able to see my items after returning to my point of death within 5 minutes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Fall from great height and die
2. Return to the point of death another player is watching over for you
3. Look for items and they will be invisible
