Torch breaks after instamining a block and placing a torch

The bug

While I was collecting some sand in the desert, I decided to use the torch trick. But when I broke the sand and placed the torch at the same time, the torch was breaking for some reason. I am fairly sure the cause of this is the client thinks I am targeting the torch and not the sand, leading to it breaking the torch. This can occur even if you place the torch in such a way that you could not possibly be targeting the hitbox of the torch.

Steps to reproduce

1. Place a column of sand like four blocks high
2. Instamine the bottom block
3. Place a torch where the block was (you have to do this step right away and not wait at all)

-->  Torch pops off for no reason
