Maximizing game window in Mac OS X causes OS crash/reboot

Maximizing the game window (not full screen) causes the game to freeze and then OS X crashes and the system reboots. If the options.txt file is set to fullscreen= true this will not occur. The computer is a late 2011 Macbook Pro with 8 gigabytes RAM.
