Items in inventory do not show automatically which leaves out updates in recipes

When crafting new items such as the first iron pick axe, the item is not automatically recognized in the inventory.  I found that if I go into my inventory, remove the item, then place it back into my inventory, it recognizes the item.  This means that when I receive a new item (such as smelting iron ore to ingots), the recipes are not updated (i.e. the crafting table does not show iron items).
