Enchanting Table Error

What I expected to happen was...:
To use my new enchanting table to enchant my sword

What actually happened was...:
My enchanting table showed no enchants, in spite of having 6 bookshelves

Steps to Reproduce:
It seems that simply going to the enchanting table and attempting to enchant things meets you with the enchanting menu with no options available, even with lapis lazuli and everything required to enchant.
