Disappearing Mobs

I am trying to make a large sheep farm, so I started breeding sheep until there were ten baby sheep. I went away from the chunk to go mining and when I went back they were gone. My friend also experienced this and neither of us know whats going on, its like they disappear when you leave. The only way the mob stays there is if I watch it grow up, which is a painstaking thing to do.
