Minecraft crashing before it can open the launcher

I clicked the Minecraft icon, and instead of opening, a Java screen popped up, saying:
Java Virtual Machine Launcher
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occured. Program will exit.
