Chunks take a long time to load and game freezes when exiting a world

Whenever I spend more than a few minutes building in a relatively large world, every entity freezes and chunks start loading extremely late. Trying to exit the world at this point freezes the game on "saving world" no crash report is made when I close the game but the world is not saved either.
