[Game Freeze] Breaking tall grass leaves the other half

[UPDATE: After further investigation, the whole game is just frozen.  fluids don't flow, regular grass doesn't break, etc.]

 

When you break half of a tall grass block, the other half stays. It does not disappear even when placing blocks next to it.
