Character phases into solid blocks, suffocates

Unsure if this is due to wearing Elytra or using ender pearls, but I can sometimes walk into a space that is air block at my feet and solid block at my head. When this happens I can only see the inside of the block and will suffocate rapidly. Occasionally when this happens I will break the block I am stuck in and find myself in pocket with no entrance.
