Cant Join realm.

I am unable to join minecraft realms

What I expected to happen was...:
I click on the invite link and open mincreaft then I can join the realm world.

What actually happened was...:
I click on the invite link

I click on the open minecraft link and minecraft opens

I begin connecting to the realm and "connecting to realm" and "generating world" text appear on the loading box.

When "searching for Game Session" appears the loading box stalls out.
