It will not let me join servers online

basically i cannot join any servers. it even will not let me join local severs. i tried to join my brothers game and it wouldn't appear. I'm guessing this is a common bug but it is very frustrating that i just got the game and now i cannot play it. please help me to fix it. This shouldnt be an issue, i have tried everything.
