Two monitors causes crash

I have two monitors; If I turn one on/off whilst Minecraft is running it will minimize the game (hide it away) and freeze it. The program will still be there but I can't open it. I don't know if the game is still running while it's frozen. When this happens I will lose a few seconds of progress so I assume the game fully freezes.
