can't open mine craft multiplayer

I just bought the Minecraft for Mac and I can't play multiplayer. It says "Multiplayer is disabled. Please check your Microsoft account settings". I contacted Microsoft and they gave me the privacy link but nothing is there except where you are required to log-in through xbox or download the xbox family app. I don't have xbox and upon searching Apple's App Store I don't see any xbox family app. I told Microsoft and they said the problem is not on their end but on Minecraft. How do I fix this?
