Microsoft Java accounts can't join servers and custom skin doesnt show in game

Hi, I recently bought minecraft java edition after december 1st, which was when new players had to log in with microsoft accounts rather than create mojang accounts. I did this but I am missing the following features:

SERVERS - I can't join any multiplayer server. When I try, it shows the error message 'failed to log in: the authentication servers are currently down for maintenance.'

SKINS - I can change my skin to a custom skin I made, but it doesnt show in game and is stuck as alex. I tried on both minecraft.net and the launcher (on launcher, sometimes it allows me to change my skin and sometimes it says 'your device is not compatible with WebGL'). Can I at least change it to Steve??
