Sudden Framerate drop (lag spike)

In this snapshot, every few minutes the game starts lagging hard on my computer. The game becomes very choppy to almost unplayable in varying degrees. I didn't encounter the same problem when I played on a 1.16.4 save (the game is slightly more laggy on Big Sur (mac osx 11.0.1), but not to the degree I'm seeing on the snapshot.
