Iron Golems can walk into walls and suffocate

While spending time in a village farming and feeding villagers, I watched an iron golem start taking rapid damage in broad daylight. When I climbed up the hill to see if anything was at its feet, I realized it was suffocating in the outside corner of a village house, and when I pushed it out, it stopped taking damage. In the attached screenshot, the golem was suffocating in the pillar of logs that my crosshair is on.
