The Ender Dragon

What I expected to happen was...:
I decided to go fight the Ender Dragon on my survival world and thought nothing random would happen.

at actually happened was...:

When I went to fight it the ender dragon kept circling one of the towers. Every time I leave the game and come back the dragon is it full health. I ended wasting my arrows
