Blocks becoming transparent in 3d person

I was playing with some friends via LAN and they started to say something about doing x-ray then they showed me that when you put yourself in third person mode (watching your back) and in some position in a one block wide space you could see a little space where the a part of the block turns transparent allowing you to see nearby caves I will provide a screenshot later on.
