Piston activated without adjacent redstone or redstone-powered blocks

When I am making a parkour and I want to make a redstone elevator, the piston is activated only with an air block between the redstone block and piston, not barrier block. There are no other redstone blocksthat are adjacent to the piston. I wonder if is it a bug or something because it really distacts me from making a vertical transportation.
