Villagers instantly despawning

One day we logged into our MC Java realm and all villagers were gone, all 5 villages we found had no villagers, the ones we had in our own artificial village gone too. we cured 3 zombie villagers and they instantly despawn once cured. however raids can still start when we enter the areas... weird...
