Cannot connect to Realms - [endless connecting]

When connecting to my friends realm it endlessly attempts to connect but never does, nor errors out.

I don't seem to have any issues with connecting to a singleplayer game it is only when trying to connect to a realm. I have been assured by the realm owner that it is up-to-date.
