Multi-player not working

trying to play a game with my bf after the new update and it says split screen unavailable, Ive looked up everything I can to resolve it and it still doesn't work, nothing wrong with my switch or tv, and we were able to play together before the update (1.16.40)so wondering if its a bug and other people are having this issue
