Placing a bed then on oak logs and using an axe to chop the wood above does not make the wood break timer reset

So while i was in a minecraft survival game, nothing unusual, i saw a big tree, and i had a iron axe, a white bed and some other items that had nothing related to this bug, i chopped as high as i could with the axe, so i placed a log on the bottom of the tree to get more wood, and i still wasn't high enough, so then i placed a bed on the log and jumped on it so i could get it more easily, but as i was mining the wood, then the texture of the wood froze, like when you are mining blocks or chopping wood as it is about to break, it has a certain texture, so when i looked away from the wood just before mining it, it just froze, i was holding down LMB and if i let it go then it wouldn't work. Just place a bed on the oak log below you and mine the oak wood above you, you'll get what i mean.
