Directional inconsistency with pistons

Found while messing with a setup shown by sethbling in a 12w18a bugs video.

1. Create the setup as shown.
2. Place redstone torches on the sides of the blocks, such that they power the dust below.
3. Observe directionally inconsistent results, despite everything being rotationally symmetrical.
