Variable for the command block don't work

On my Minecraft server, Ramshard hosts it, none of my servers allows the use of variables for commands. I have commands on, and command blocks on, and anything that doesn't involve variables like @p  will work, but if I try to use variables it doesn't recognize it. I use paper spigot for plugins, and I have contacted Ramshard and both couldn't do anything about it.
