New nether portal always generate in overworld when coming back

Ever since 1.16.2 I am having an issue with connecting the portal I have in the nether to the one already in place in the overworld. I am able to reach the portal I have in the nether from the overworld, but when I come back, it always spawns a new one. I tried to light off/on the portal I want linked but it did not work.

EDIT: It succesfully linked back to my regular portal in the overworld once, but since then it still generates new portal.
