Item entities thrown at cacti have a visual delay before being destroyed

When an item is thrown at a cactus, the item slides down the side of the cactus or across the top of the cactus before getting destroyed.
I expected the items to be destroyed instantly, as minecarts and boats have no visual delay when being destroyed by a cactus.
