My launcher resets when I transfer a file to minecraft.

So, I was making a server for my friends to play on and I go to my launcher to test it out. I see that I'm logged out, and sign back in. None of my installations are there nor my saved worlds / multiplayer servers. I go to my files to transfer over my resource packs to the new one and it just crashes again. I do that yet a second time and it resets. 
Alright. I go to the minecraft Discord and someone suggests that I reinstall my launcher. so I do just that. What I get is another empty login screen without my worlds, installations and files. Could you help? Thanks!
