Can't Craft Horse Saddle or Armor

I downloaded the Pre-Release of minecraft 1.6. No horses were spawned in my world (it was originally generated in 1.5.2). In addition, I cannot craft saddles and I cannot craft horse armor. I have added horses, saddles, and armor using creative mode. This was the only way I could find to get those items in my world
