Unable to connect to minecraft server list

Version: 1.8.9  (it wasn't in the list)

I've been trying to play Minecraft for the last two days with no luck. I select multiplayer then as soon as I do a screen comes up (see attached) and it has a message on it "scanning for games on your local network" and it just stays there. I have no idea what's going on because I had played with problem about 1 week ago but this week when I try I don't get anywhere.  

Any ideas what's going on and how to fix?
