Whenever I Launch an older version of minecraft it crashes instantly

Basically i updated my launcher and i tried playing 1.8.9 and it doesn't work, it just crashed every time I click play. I tried launching 1.16.1 it worked perfectly. Ive tried deleting options.txt and still nothing happened. Im pretty sure its any versions under 1.16.1.
