Progress and items lost after 1.16 update

I am running a PvP server with 6 friends, 2 of them experienced total loss of levels and all equipped items/armor/weapons when logging back in to the game after the update. They are essentially starting from scratch after having logged several hours in version 1.15. PLEASE HELP!
