Unable to Place Seeds in Certain Areas

I went to go place seeds on my farm and they won't place down in very random spots. Attached is a photo of what my farm looked like post trying to place the seeds (carrots and potatoes). I don't think I did anything wrong, but the person I was playing with couldn't place them either. Later I went to place down seeds in one of the empty spots, and the wheat that was placed beside it basically broke.
