Villagers do not accept thrown objects

I am currently trying to breed a pair of villagers. I have over twenty beds in their near vicinity, and I have traded with both villagers. When I throw food i.e. bread, seeds, carrots, potatoes, etc., the villagers do not accept them. The either constantly look at the objects or simply walk away.
