I cant craft any torches in minecraft 1.16 release canditate 1

I collected some coal and the crafted some sticks, but the recipe for torches did not unlock so I placed the items accordingly in the crafting table. I even searched for the recipe on the internet to check if I was doing it wrong but they won't craft.
