Using the /fill command with signs is not functioning as it should

As far as I  know, this is a bug for 1.16.6, I typed /fill and the coords I wanted, then birch sign. When I entered it nothing appeared to happen. I tried again and it seems to delete other blocks in the way and not add the signs
