Search Items Menu Not Allowing Hotkeys

In creative while searching for anything in the "Search Items" menu, you simply cannot put the items in the hotbar using the hotkeys. In my opinion there should either be a way to unselect the search box allowing the user to easily hotkey the blocks or items in the hotbar or just going back to the previous system where hovering over the item and clicking the hotkey would put the item in the selected slot.
